Testimonials

The standard of education our daughter received in her first year has been exemplary and all the staff have been very friendly and extremely co-operative with any queries we have brought to them. The transition from primary school to secondary school has been made very comfortable for her and a very big decision in her life as to choice of schools has proven to be the right one.

Durham House - Latest News

The first half term of the year and Durham House were off to a flying start. Our year 7s settled in very quickly, and the new Prefect Team took  on their new job roles swiftly and without problem. For the first year, we have had a Durham House Council which includes pupils from all year groups so that we can get the overall opinions of the House; so far this has been very successful.

Soon after the Year 7’s settled in their house away day came, all the Year 7’s went to this adventure and enjoyed it. These New Year 7’s also have a chance to be part of learning challenge on Thursday mornings, that will help them with learning, decisions, and opinions that can help them through the school years. Alongside this came the Year 7 reading group which is focused on helping improve their reading skills and literacy.

This half term came with knowledge and fame: Fame academy! The talented people of Durham took the stage and showed their talents, a few of the Durham students who participated, were Rachel Barnes, Heather Byrnes and Will Hand. Heather and Rachel got into the show and our own Durham Prefect Heather with the help of a Ripon student stole the show.

After half term the achievements of last year’s pupils were recognised with a formal presentation evening to award pupils for their achievement and endeavour in their previous year. The evening saw pupils from current years 8 to 12 collecting shields on stage from the guest speaker, Dr Lindsay, with musical interludes from the choir, a flute duet and speeches from Mr Rogers and Dr Lindsay. Likewise, there was a Governor’s Award Evening that celebrated the talents of individuals in specific subjects. Subject teachers chose a boy and a girl from each year group (year 10, 11 & 12) and spoke about their talents, awarding them with a certificate and vouchers.

Anti-bullying week was also during last term. Prefects got involved in an assembly which brought forms together to think about bullying and sharing their ideas with the rest of Durham House. Furthermore, forms joined together to watch a DVD about bullying and to answer questions about it, giving a strong message about anti-bullying.

Last half term also saw many forms setting up stalls and taking part in the Christmas Fayre. Durham set up many stalls like basketball shoot out and some of the house served food and drinks to people whom attended the fayre. 60% of the money from the Christmas fayre went to the Salvation Army, which was Durham’s charity this Christmas.

Finally, the term ended with almost 2 weeks of mock exams for the year 11s. They worked through the exams maturely and with good behaviour. These exams showed that the year 11s were heading in the right direction for their real GCSE exams later this year and also gave them an idea of the revision and effort they would have to put in.

Overall, so far, this year has been good for Durham House, especially for D9 who had the best attendance last term out of all of the forms in Durham.
