ICT

All pupils study ICT in Years 9, 10 and 11 for 1 hour per week. In year 8, pupils study ICT as part of the Humanities rotation; a 10 week block of 3 hours per week.

The National Programme of Study is followed in years 8 and 9. In years 10 & 11 all pupils study the EdExcel GCSE ICT (Short Course) specification.

Students who opt for AS/A2 ICT in the
Sixth Form follow the WJEC specification; 60% examination (completed in January) and 40% coursework (completed by June).

Students who opt for our level 2 Business Studies and ICT course (worth upto 8 GCSEs) in the Sixth Form follow the OCR National Diploma qualification; for which they study several modules throughout the one year course in 20 hours per week.

What is ICT all about?

We aim to develop pupils’ practical skills and extend pupils’ knowledge and understanding of ICT systems. The courses at KS3, KS4 and KS5 are based on practical work and problem solving and involve pupils developing real ICT systems.

All the key pieces of software are included: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, communication software, modelling/simulations and computer control.
Pupils gain an insight into how computer systems work, computer networking, programming, communications and the Internet.

Will I enjoy ICT?

You will enjoy this course if you want to study a subject that:

  • Is relevant to the world you live in, and to your future
  • Will enable you to develop practical skills that will be of immediate value in your other subjects and further education
  • Takes a practical approach
  • Spreads the coursework load over the duration of the course
  • Develops a full range of skills that will be useful in other subjects you study, and in employment.
