Art & Design

We provide students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in art and design across both 2D and 3D media.

The Art and Design Department is staffed by a team of specialists who work in a range of disciplines.

To develop student's skills at Key stage 3

we plan a series of varied and stimulating projects designed to give students the opportunity to explore the main Art Themes:

  • PORTRAITS
  • LANDSCAPES
  • NATURAL FORMS
  • FIGURES
  • STILL LIFE

The work produced by individuals, or groups of students, is celebrated and on display around school and in the Art classrooms. This provides a lively and stimulating working environment. Whenever possible we provide enhancement activities such as:

  • Art related visits
  • Lunchtime and after school Art clubs
  • Involvement in competitions and community projects, which give gifted and talented pupils a wider forum to demonstrate their ability

We also look at artists, culture, the modern environment and other interesting topics that encourage students to be creative, independent and to develop your own style.

At Key Stage 4

GCSE Art and Design

Students are introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of fine art media, techniques and processes, including both traditional and new technologies. They will explore relevant images, artifacts and resources relating to a range of Fine Art, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples which are integral to the investigating and making process. Responses to these examples are shown through practical and critical activities which demonstrate the students’ understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. Students will explore drawing for different purposes and needs.

  • In Yr9 students will work on a variety of small projects that further develop their skills in preparation for beginning coursework.
  • In Yr10 students will start their Art coursework.
  • In Yr11 students will complete their coursework and the exam element of the course.
  • GCSE Art and Design is made up of 60% coursework and 40% exam.

In recent years A*- C grades have been achieved by over 60% of our students. This success provided them with the entry qualifications onto further education courses, art based or otherwise.
