Mathematics

The Maths Department is a close-knit, caring and enthusiastic team who have always been mutually supportive and committed to providing an atmosphere conducive to high-quality teaching and learning.

The department presently consists of nine specialist maths staff with a wealth of experience who teach in dedicated maths rooms. In addition, we have the use of our own computer suite.  All groups are set according to ability, which we are convinced is the best way to allow all pupils to maximise their potential. Pupils are assessed half termly and there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to change set if it is deemed to be in their best interest.

KS3: Year 7

The course covers the four operations with numbers and their application including simple fractions, decimals, and units of measure. Algebra and graphical work are introduced, as is work on angles, shapes and solids (including perimeter, area and volume). Pupils learn to use functional skills in mathematics in various situations through data collection and illustration, and by problem solving and investigation. The use of computers is an integral part of the syllabus, enabling maths to be practised in a stimulating and interesting way. Logo and Spreadsheets are introduced.

KS3: Year 8

The course extends the work covered in Year 7 on numbers, simple fractions and decimals, money, units of measure and time, algebra, angles, construction, shapes and solids, perimeter, area, volume and data handling. Work continues on problem solving and investigations and in using functional skills in mathematics in various contexts. Pupils also cover probability, ratios, circumference, percentage and indices. Computer use is an integral part of the course.  Spreadsheets are taught and used to practise mathematics. Logo is used to illustrate programming and control and strengthen spatial concepts.

KS4: Year 9

The course extends the work covered in Year 8 on numbers, measures, money, percentage, approximations and algebraic functions, formulae, equations and graphical work. Extension work on shape, angles, perimeter, area and volume, data handling and illustration and probability is also undertaken. Pupils may also cover work on indices and standard form, loci, transformations, flow diagrams, networks, ratio and proportion, Pythagoras and trigonometry.  Using functional skills in mathematics through problem solving and investigation takes place throughout the course. Computer work extends the work of earlier years. Topics, pace of work and emphasis vary according to the ability of the pupil.

KS4: Year 10

The work covered varies according to ability level but broadly fits into the following areas: - knowledge and use of all types of numbers and measure including estimation and approximation; patterns and relationships; formulae, equations and inequations; graphical representation; shape, location and movement; statistics and probability.  All year 10 pupils take a GCSE exam in statistics in June.  One GCSE mathematic module is taken during year 10, in June, which contributes 30% toward their final GCSE grade.

KS4: Year 11

The work covered is tailored to the individual needs and ability of the pupil and broadly fits into the following areas:-  Knowledge and use of all types of number and measure including estimation and approximation; patterns and relationships; formulae, equations and inequations; graphical representation; shape, location and movement.  The emphasis is on consolidation and practice in preparation for the final G.C.S.E. unit (worth 50%).
