Science holds a unique place in the curriculum by providing students with a wide and varied body of knowledge supported by experimental and investigative work.

Our aim is to inspire students with a love of science and a curiosity about phenomenon and events in the world around.

The Department has a distinctive ethos in which human value and personal development are nurtured alongside a determined focus on high academic standards.

All colleagues in the Department share the Head of Departments own vision that a good teacher/student working relationship, with mutual respect, supported by partnership of the whole school and parents, is more likely to encourage students to take a measure of personal responsibility for their own future and to motivate then to do their best.  Success lies in holding high expectations while recognising each pupil as an individual.

The Department has a team of eight full-time teachers and two full-time laboratory technicians, working in a department area with seven fully equipped and up-to-date Science laboratories, all fitted with digital projectors and interactive whiteboards, one dedicated computer room and three prep rooms.  Teachers are based in their own laboratories whenever possible.

All lessons are taught in the specialist accommodation.  The Department is excellently resourced with equipment, teaching materials, software and textbooks and all staff are provided with their own laptop with ICT training provided on request.

At Key Stage 4, Year 10 students currently follow OCR’s 21st Century Science scheme, followed by Additional and Additional Applied Science in Year 11.  From September 2008, students will follow the new QCA scheme.

Teachers are designated groups in Years 7, 8, 10 and 11 by the Head of Department and Year 9 groups are rotated.

The department will be delivering ‘A’ Level Science in the near future as a result of the sixth form provision being offered by the school from September 2008.
