Textile Department

Studying Textiles may help students to :

  • Work in Interior Design: wallpaper, window dressings, lampshades, rugs, bedding etc.
  • Travel the world working for companys buying and selling fabrics and accessories
  • Take on commissions for wall hangings, embroideries, etc.
  • Study textiles at college
  • Study fashion at university
  • Become a specialized designer of accessories such as bags, hats, shoes, etc.

The list is almost endless. We, as human beings, will always need to cover our bodies with some form of clothing and our homes will inevitably require furnishing. Even if the subject is not taken any further when secondary school is complete, the skills learned will be useful in your every day living.

Course at KS4, the Art/Textiles option covers subjects such as :

  • Fashion illustration
  • Fashion designing and making
  • Soft furnishings, cushions, simple stools, wall hangings, etc.
  • Machine and hand embroidery
  • Various forms of printing

These are just a few subject areas available to students who must be committed to the subject and work hard.

There are no written examinations, but there is a ten hour practical exam during which students must complete their final exam piece.
